The Yard Work Was Half Done When Earl Lay Down for a Quick Break
Halfway through the yard work, somebody decided it was nap time. Earl is stretched out on an old blue blanket in the grass, eyes closed, his cheek resting right against the top of Custard's fluffy head. The cream Exotic Shorthair is curled up beside him, eyes squeezed into contented slits, tail wrapped around her body. All around them, the backyard is a cheerful clutter: a tipped watering can, gardening gloves, a potted plant, scattered tools, and a pair of garden clogs abandoned in the grass. The chores will apparently be finished later.
Cats love a warm patch of ground, and a sunny lawn next to a favorite person checks every box. Sunbathing helps cats stay cozy, since their comfortable temperature range runs warmer than ours. A few cautions keep outdoor naps safe. Light-colored cats with thin fur on their ears and noses can get sunburned, so shade is a good idea during the brightest hours. Lawns can also be treated with fertilizer or weed killer, which pets should not walk through or lick off their fur, so choose an untreated patch. And, of course, keep an eye on your cat so she does not wander off once she wakes up feeling adventurous.
Earl's to-do list will still be there when he opens his eyes. For now, the grass is soft, the sun is warm, and his favorite napping buddy is purring right next to his ear.
