Ruth Turned the Key and Bruno Knew It Was Adventure Time
Ruth sits behind a big old steering wheel in a soft green cardigan, short silver hair framing her face and a small smile aimed at the passenger seat. Bruno sits beside her, tongue lolling, brown leather collar jingling, and his dark eyes bright with excitement. The cab is worn but warm, a seat belt hangs behind them, and through the open window you can see potted plants lining a porch. Bruno has the look of a dog who knows exactly where this trip might end up, probably a park, and has no intention of missing any of it.
Many dogs adore car rides, but a few safety steps make them more comfortable. A harness made for car travel or a secured crate protects a dog in a sudden stop, and it keeps him from leaping into the driver's lap. Boxers are active and social, so they usually love going places, but they should never be left alone in a parked car, because temperatures climb fast. Keep the window open only partway so he cannot jump out or catch debris in his eyes. Water and a short break every hour or two make longer drives easier. Talk to your vet about motion sickness if he seems uneasy.
Ruth turns the key, Bruno wiggles in his seat, and the road opens up. Wherever they are headed, the best part is already happening.
