Rain Fell Softly and Ruth and Bruno Watched Without a Word
Rain drifts down past the porch posts as the sky glows orange through the clouds, and Ruth sits with her hands in her lap, her gray cardigan wrapped around her and her gaze on the yard. A pair of boots, a tote bag, and pots of green plants line the porch edge. Bruno sits at the front of the picture, broad chest white, his head turned in the same direction as hers, his big dark eyes watching the water. A plastic tub of tools and a few gardening bits crowd the corner. The air feels fresh and the sound is soft, a steady patter on the roof.
Many dogs have mixed feelings about rain, and some are happy to watch it from a dry spot. Boxers have short coats and little body fat, so they get chilly when wet, and a towel waiting by the door is a good idea. Some dogs are nervous about thunderstorms. If yours is, a quiet room, a favorite blanket, and a calm voice help, and you should talk to your vet if the fear is strong. Covered porches are a nice middle ground, offering fresh air and rain sounds without a soaking. Wiping paws after any outing keeps the floors clean.
Neither Ruth nor Bruno looks in a hurry for the rain to stop. The porch is dry, the light is warm, and that is plenty.
