Grandpa Ken Made Popcorn for Movie Night. Shadow Had Her Own Plans for It.

Popcorn is the whole point of movie night, and Shadow knows it. Grandpa Ken, in his olive sweater vest and rolled-up denim shirt, kneels by the couch holding a heaping bowl, while the black German Shepherd leans in with her nose hovering just above the kernels. Her big front paws rest on the cushion like she is settling in for the opening credits. A few stray pieces have already landed on the coffee table next to the remote and a pair of reading glasses, and a plaid throw waits on the back of the sofa for later.

Plain, air-popped popcorn is generally fine for dogs as an occasional treat, but the movie theater style is another story. Butter, heavy salt, and seasonings can upset a dog's stomach, and unpopped kernels are hard enough to crack a tooth or get stuck in the throat. If you want to share, set aside a few plain, fully popped pieces before you add the toppings. German Shepherds are big, food-motivated dogs, so it also helps to keep the bowl at a height where an eager nose cannot help itself while you are watching the screen.

Ken looks perfectly happy to split the snack, and Shadow looks perfectly happy to accept. Whatever is on the TV tonight, the best show in the room is probably the one happening right here on the couch.
