Grandpa Ken Sat Down at the Old Piano. He Didn't Stay Alone on the Bench for Long.
The old upright piano has seen a lot of years, and today it has an unusual duet partner. Grandpa Ken sits at the keys in a cream sweater vest over a blue shirt, glasses low, fingers resting gently as he plays a slow tune. Shadow has hopped up onto the wooden bench right next to him and sits tall and proud, ears up, gazing off toward the window like a serious concert-goer. Books and a houseplant crown the top of the piano, a gray throw is folded on the edge, a mug waits nearby, and soft light filters through the sheer curtains.
Playing an instrument is a wonderful hobby at any age. Many older adults find that music offers relaxation, a creative outlet, and a fun mental workout, as reading notes and coordinating both hands keep the brain engaged. Dogs often enjoy being close to their people during these quiet routines, and some seem to settle more easily to calm music. Just keep an eye on volume and on furniture height. A large dog jumping onto and off a hard bench can be tough on its joints over time, so a nearby rug or dog bed is a comfy alternative.
Shadow does not seem to need sheet music. She has the best seat in the house, right next to her favorite musician, and she looks ready to stay for the encore.
