Bea Started Reading Out Loud on the Couch. Peanut Wanted to Check the Book Herself.
Chapter one has an extra listener. Harold and Bea sit snuggled together on the couch under a soft knit blanket, both in cream sweaters, with Bea holding an open book in her lap while Harold leans in to follow along through his glasses. Peanut stands on the cushion right in front of them, stretching her nose up to sniff the edge of the pages as if she would like to check the plot for herself. Reading glasses and a mug rest on the coffee table, a potted plant leans in from the corner, and candles and family photos fill the shelf behind.
Reading aloud to a pet might sound silly, but many people find it soothing, and some reading programs even pair hesitant young readers with calm dogs because a dog listens without judging. For dogs, the steady, gentle sound of a familiar voice can be relaxing, and the physical closeness of a shared couch adds to the comfort. Chihuahuas in particular tend to crave closeness with their favorite people and often follow them from room to room. Giving them a soft spot right beside you during quiet routines can help them feel secure and settled.
Peanut might not follow every twist of the story, but she clearly knows the best part is being included. Harold and Bea seem happy to keep reading, one page and one sniff at a time.
