Harold Turned On the Hose to Wash the Car. Only One Dog Stayed Dry.

Water is flying, and so is one very excited dog. Harold stands by the silver car with the hose, laughing so hard his eyes crinkle shut, while a shaggy brown pup leaps up to snap at the spray, ears flapping and droplets bursting everywhere. Bea crouches by a blue bucket of suds holding a sponge, beaming at the chaos. Peanut, meanwhile, stands a little apart on the wet driveway, fluffy and mostly dry, looking straight ahead with the calm of someone who has decided not to get involved. Trash bins, potted plants, and a garage complete the suburban scene.

Chasing hose water is a classic summer game for many dogs, and it can be a fun way to cool off and burn energy. A few things keep it safe. Soapy car-wash water should not be swallowed, so keeping the dogs away from the bucket is smart. Hose water sitting in the sun can get very hot at first, so let it run cool before spraying near pets. A gentle stream is better than a hard jet aimed at the face. And not every dog loves getting wet. Little dogs like Chihuahuas often prefer to watch, and that is perfectly fine.

The car may end up cleaner, or it may not, but the afternoon is already a success. Harold and Bea are laughing, the shaggy pup is in heaven, and Peanut is staying perfectly, deliberately dry.
