They Agreed to Share One Ice Cream Cone. Nobody Asked the Siamese.
It is the hottest part of the day, and Ruth has decided that one ice cream cone is plenty for two. She holds the vanilla scoop up between herself and Harold, both of them grinning, foreheads almost touching over the treat. The kitchen table is a happy clutter of coffee mugs, a folded napkin, a little succulent, a glass of water and a bowl of bananas and apples. And right in front, front and center like the guest of honor, sits Miso the Siamese. His bright blue eyes are fixed on the camera with an expression that says he has already noticed the cone and is simply waiting for the right moment.
It is tempting to offer a cat a lick, but ice cream is not a good treat for them. Most adult cats do not digest lactose well, and dairy can lead to an upset stomach. Sugary desserts also add calories cats do not need. Some frozen treats can contain ingredients like chocolate or certain sweeteners that are unsafe for pets. If your cat loves joining in at snack time, keep a few cat treats handy or ask your vet about simple, pet-safe options. That way the cat still gets a share of the moment without the tummy trouble later.
Miso will not be getting any vanilla today, but judging by the smiles across the table, nobody is going without something sweet.
