Harold and Ruth Thought They Were Taking an Evening Walk. Miso Had a Route Planned.

Evening walks have a clear leader in this household, and it is not Harold. Miso strides down the narrow garden path out front, ears back slightly, blue eyes fixed ahead, his cream body and dark tail moving with purpose. A few steps behind, Ruth in a green cardigan and Harold in a plaid shirt and cap stroll arm in arm, both smiling at the cat's determination. The path winds past potted plants, a green watering can, a little wooden shed with a glowing window, lavender and leafy vegetables. The sky is turning soft and gold behind the fence line as the day winds down.

Siamese cats are often described as dog-like because many will follow their people around, come when called and even walk with them through the yard. That trait is part of why they are popular with families who want an interactive pet. If you want a cat to stroll with you, start small. Introduce a harness indoors with treats, let the cat wear it for short periods, then practice in a quiet, enclosed space. Dusk is a busy time for wildlife, so keeping walks short and in familiar areas is wise. A reflective collar or harness can also help when light is fading.

Ruth likes to say they are walking the cat. Harold suspects it is the other way around. Either way, it is the nicest part of the evening.
