Two Grandparents Squeezed Into One Rocking Chair. The Cat Found Something Better.

The old rocking chair was built for one, but Ruth and Harold have never let that stop them. She sits nestled in the seat in a cream cable-knit cardigan, and he perches beside her on the arm, his cheek pressed to her hair, both of them smiling. A knitted throw hangs over the chair back and a stack of books leans against a basket nearby. Sunlight pours across the worn wooden floor, and right in the warmest patch lies Miso, stretched out on his side, eyes squeezed shut, paws tucked, utterly unbothered by the creak of the rockers just behind his tail.

Cats are well known for following sunbeams around the house. They are descended from desert-dwelling ancestors, and they seem to enjoy warmth more than many other pets. A sunny patch helps them stay cozy while they rest, and cats sleep a great deal, often well over half the day. One thing to watch with rocking chairs is that cats and tails tend to end up in exactly the wrong spot. Before you rock, a quick glance down is a good habit, and placing the chair on a rug can make the motion quieter and keep a napping pet from being startled.

Nobody in this room has anywhere to be. The chair creaks, the sun shifts a little, and Miso rolls over to keep up with it. That is about all the excitement this afternoon needs.
