Marigold Waited Politely at the Stove While Dottie Flipped the Pancakes
Two golden pancakes sizzle in a black skillet while Dottie, silver braid trailing over her denim shirt, keeps a careful eye on the edges. The kitchen around her is rich with detail: a bowl of batter, a dish of butter, garlic bulbs, a basket of onions and a tiny cactus on the counter, with children's drawings pinned to the wall. At the corner of the stove, Marigold sits upright and patient as a doorman, orange and white face tilted up, eyes tracking every flip of the spatula.
Cooking with a cat in the kitchen takes some planning. A hot stove and a curious paw are a bad mix, so many people set a rule that cats stay on the floor, and keep handles turned inward. Onions and garlic, both visible in this kitchen, are harmful to cats, even in small amounts, so keep them out of reach and never share food seasoned with them. Pancakes themselves contain flour, sugar and butter, none of which a cat needs, and syrup is best left off the menu. A designated treat dish for the cat gives her something to look forward to without risking her health.
Marigold's good manners deserve a reward, and she knows it. She waits without a sound, the picture of politeness. Dottie flips the next one and, no doubt, has a nice little cat treat ready.
