Grandpa Hank Went to the Market for Tomatoes. Pretzel Went for the Smells.
Green canopies shade crates of tomatoes, apples, cucumbers, and potatoes, and Grandpa Hank is taking his time strolling past them all. He's in a plaid button-up and khakis held up with dark suspenders, leash looped in one hand, a warm smile tucked into his white beard. Out front, Pretzel trots along in a blue collar, mouth open in a cheerful pant and ears bouncing, plainly delighted by the smells drifting off every table. A bicycle leans by a porch, red geraniums bloom in a pot, and the overcast sky keeps the morning cool and pleasant.
Farmers markets can be great outings for well-socialized dogs, but it's smart to check whether dogs are allowed before you go, since rules vary. Crowds, strollers, and other dogs can be a lot, so a short leash and a calm, confident dog make the trip enjoyable for everyone. Keep an eye on the ground for dropped food; grapes, onions, and some other common produce aren't safe for dogs. Bring water on warm days, and avoid long stretches on hot pavement. If your dog seems overwhelmed, a quieter time of day or a shorter visit can help build their confidence.
A bag of fresh produce, a slow walk, and a dog who greets the whole world with a grin. Hank and Pretzel turn a simple errand into the highlight of the week.
