Grandpa Hank Shoveled the Walk. Pretzel Found the Deepest Drift in the Yard.

AI imagedachshundsnow daywinter

Snow is clinging to Pretzel's whiskers, chest, and paws as she bulldozes her way through a fresh drift, tongue peeking out and ears flopping in the cold air. Her dapple coat is speckled with white flakes, and she looks thrilled with herself. Behind her, Grandpa Hank is hard at work in a knit cap, flannel shirt, and suspenders, pushing a metal shovel along the walkway. A blue sled leans against the house, a pair of gloves lies forgotten on the porch steps, and a pile of firewood waits beside the door. The morning sun is breaking through a misty winter haze.

Snow play is great fun for many dogs, but short-legged breeds sit low to the ground and can get chilled quickly, so keep outings brief in deep cold and watch for shivering or lifting paws. Ice can collect between toes, and de-icing salts and chemicals can irritate paw pads or upset a stomach if licked off. Wiping paws with a warm, damp cloth after coming inside is an easy habit. Pet-safe ice melt is a good option for your own walkways. Antifreeze is very toxic to dogs, so clean up any drips in driveways and garages right away, and call your vet immediately if you suspect exposure.

The walk gets cleared, Pretzel gets her wild romp, and then both of them get to come back inside and warm up. That's a pretty perfect snow day.
