Frank and Ruth Tried for a Sweet Couple Selfie. Domino Had Other Plans.

Golden late-afternoon light spills across the porch as Frank and Ruth squeeze in close for a selfie, cheeks almost touching, both grinning like newlyweds. Front and center, naturally, is Domino, his mouth open in a wide Frenchie smile and his brown leather collar catching the sun. The porch around them is full of life: clay pots of herbs, a pair of work boots, a canvas tote stuffed with odds and ends, a plaid blanket on the bench, and a few autumn leaves scattered across a well-worn doormat.

Getting a dog to look at a phone camera takes a little strategy. Most dogs respond best when the photographer gets down to their eye level, keeps the session short, and uses a soft squeak, a word they know, or a treat held just above the lens. Natural light, like the warm glow on this porch, flatters dark and light fur alike and avoids the startle of a flash. For flat-faced breeds such as French Bulldogs, it also helps to snap photos when the dog is relaxed rather than right after play, since a calm dog is easier to frame and less likely to be panting hard. And always reward the effort, even if the picture comes out blurry.

Some families frame wedding portraits. Others will end up treasuring a slightly tilted phone photo with a dog's nose taking up a third of the shot. Frank and Ruth look like they would happily choose the second kind.
