Earl Spread Out a Lifetime of Photos. Pewter Had to Inspect Every One.
The table has disappeared under a drift of old black-and-white photographs, and Earl is bending over them with careful fingers, studying one faded face at a time. His glasses are pushed down his nose, his vest hangs open over a plaid shirt, and a lamp glows warmly behind him. Pewter has arrived from the right side of the frame, nose lowered, whiskers forward, investigating the pictures as if she could recognize every one. Coffee mugs, a box of tissues, and a stack of folded blankets fill the room behind them.
Looking through old photographs is a gentle pastime that many older adults enjoy, and sharing it with a pet can make the afternoon even more comforting. Cats like to investigate anything new on the table, but photos are best kept out of reach of curious paws and claws. Old prints can be fragile, so it helps to handle them by the edges and keep drinks well away from the pile. If a cat is determined to join in, give her a clean blanket nearby or a small box to sit in so she feels included without trampling the memories. Russian Blues are generally calm and attentive, and many like to stay close when their person is quiet and thoughtful. Even a gentle presence at the table can make remembering feel a little lighter.
Earl may be sorting by year or by name, but Pewter is simply sorting by smell. Both methods seem to be going fine.
