Grandpa Ken Spread Out His Quilt Squares. Mochi Found a Better Use for Them.
Needle in one hand, thread pulled taut in the other, Grandpa Ken leans over a patchwork quilt of soft blues and faded florals. His knit sweater vest sits over a plaid shirt, and his glasses have slipped just low enough for close work. Right beside him, Mochi has claimed the fabric pile as a personal mattress. The fawn Pug lies sprawled across folded squares, black muzzle tucked against a flowered cotton print, eyes shut tight. Shelves of folded linens and a basket of scraps fill the quiet room behind them.
Dogs love a pile of fabric for good reasons. Soft, layered material holds warmth, and anything that carries a favorite person's scent is especially comforting. Pugs in particular are known as devoted companions that like to stay close to their people, so a nap within arm's reach is classic behavior. If you sew or craft with a pet nearby, keep a careful eye on the small stuff. Needles, pins, buttons and loose thread can be dangerous if swallowed, and string can cause serious problems in the digestive tract. A pincushion with a lid, a closed sewing box and a quick sweep of the floor afterward go a long way. Giving your dog its own folded blanket next to your work area can also keep it close without letting it sleep on the pins.
There is something fitting about a quilt being made beside a snoring Pug. By the time Grandpa Ken ties off the last stitch, the finished blanket may already have its first official tester picked out.
