Grandpa Ken Went to the Market for Peaches. Mochi Ran the Whole Trip.
Saturday morning at the market means crates of cucumbers, baskets of peaches and the smell of fresh herbs, but Grandpa Ken only has eyes for the little dog trotting ahead of him. He walks with an easy stride in an olive sweater vest and pressed trousers, leash looped loosely in one hand, grinning down at Mochi. The fawn Pug marches along the gravel path with ears flopped forward and a tongue just peeking out, clearly enjoying being the most important shopper at the stalls. Tomatoes, potted rosemary and leafy greens line the wooden tables behind them.
Markets are a feast for a dog's nose, which makes them fun but also a little busy. A short, non-retractable leash keeps a small dog close in crowds, and it helps to watch for dropped food, since grapes, onions and some other produce can be harmful to dogs. Hot pavement and gravel in summer can be tough on paws, and Pugs in particular struggle in heat because of their short noses, so morning visits and plenty of shade are smart. Not every market welcomes pets, so check the rules first. For a well-socialized dog, though, the sights, sounds and friendly strangers can be wonderful enrichment.
Grandpa Ken may have come for peaches, but judging by that smile, the real highlight is the walk itself. Mochi sets the pace, and nobody seems to mind stopping for every interesting smell along the way.
