Grandma Odessa Brought Bread to the Pond. Copper Brought Excellent Manners.
The pond is full of ducks, and Grandma Odessa leans down toward them with a handful of crumbs and a wide smile. She wears a gray cardigan over a blue plaid shirt, her silver hair soft in the afternoon light. Copper stands close at her side, red-gold face tilted toward the water, brown eyes fixed on the mallards bobbing at the edge. The ducks paddle closer with glossy green heads and speckled brown feathers, and a stretch of green park and a few distant ducks fill the background. The big dog seems to know that this is not the time to dash in.
Feeding ducks is a classic park activity, but a few facts help keep wildlife and pets safe. Bread is not a healthy food for ducks, and wildlife groups often suggest better options like oats, cracked corn or lettuce in small amounts. For dogs, a leash is important around ponds, since many retrievers love to jump in after birds and swallowing pond water can cause stomach upset. Algae in warm weather can be harmful, so keep your dog away from green or scummy water. Teach a calm sit or leave it cue near wildlife, and reward your dog for staying close. Birds can carry germs, so wash your hands after.
Copper is doing an excellent job of staying put. The ducks seem unbothered, and Grandma Odessa is enjoying the whole thing.
