Five Sparrows Landed Next to Grandma Odessa. Copper Stayed Still as a Statue.
A wooden tray piled with seeds hangs from a shepherd's hook, and five little sparrows are crowded on its edge, eating. Grandma Odessa sits very close in an olive green jacket and wire glasses, picking at the seed with a careful, gentle hand. Beside her, Copper sits as still as a statue, glossy deep red coat gleaming, ears hanging and eyes focused on the birds with great restraint. Behind them are flower pots, a metal watering can and a garden path in soft light. It is a small miracle of patience on four legs.
Backyard birds are a joy to watch, and feeders can be a calm hobby for many people. If you have a dog, supervise at first and teach a solid sit or stay so the birds feel safe. Retrievers have a strong instinct to notice birds, but with practice many learn to watch calmly. Reward your dog for staying quiet and relaxed near the feeder. Clean feeders regularly to prevent mold, and keep seed stored away from dogs, as large amounts can upset their stomachs and spilled seed can attract rodents. Place the feeder where a dog cannot knock it over. A few quiet minutes outdoors can be restful for you and your dog.
The sparrows seem to trust Copper completely. Grandma Odessa gives him a slow nod of thanks for being such a good neighbor.
