Two Retrievers Settled In for Grandma Odessa's Evening Story
Grandma Odessa sits on the couch in a soft gray cardigan, a book open in her hands and her mouth caught in the middle of a word. She is reading aloud to two attentive listeners. On the left, Copper rests his deep red-brown muzzle on the sofa cushion with his eyes on her face. In the foreground a lighter, honey-gold retriever sits upright with his nose nearly touching the book and his ears forward. A lamp glows warmly on the side table beside a mug and glasses, and the evening room feels hushed and cozy.
Reading aloud is a calming routine, and dogs often settle down to a soothing voice, even if they do not follow the words. If you have more than one dog, give each of them a comfortable spot so nobody feels crowded, and use quiet time like this to reinforce calm behavior with praise or a small treat. Golden Retrievers are social dogs that like to be near their people, and they usually get along well with other friendly dogs. Introduce new dogs slowly and supervise them at first. Keep an eye on food and toys, which can cause squabbles. A bedtime story is also a good way for people to wind down.
Whatever the story is, both of them look as though they have heard it before and still love it. Grandma Odessa turns the page, and nobody moves.
