Grandma Odessa Leaned In and Copper Heard Every Word
A weathered boardwalk stretches toward the sea behind them, with shingled cottages, a wooden railing and dune grass swaying in the salt air. Grandma Odessa sits on a bench in a cream cardigan and green shirt, glasses perched on her nose and a gold earring catching the light. She is leaning in close to Copper with a soft smile, and he has turned his head toward her, mouth slightly open, deep red-gold coat shining. The two are very close, as if sharing a secret. The ocean is a pale line far off under a cloudy sky.
A beach walk is a lovely day out for a retriever, but it helps to plan ahead. Sand and boardwalk boards can get hot in summer sun, so test them with your hand before your dog walks on them. Bring plenty of fresh water, since drinking seawater can upset a dog's stomach, and offer shade breaks. Rinse your dog's coat after a swim or sandy play to remove salt, and check the paws for cuts. Keep your dog leashed where required and watch for items like fishing hooks and broken shells. Golden Retrievers usually enjoy water, but a canine life jacket is a good idea in deeper surf. Enjoy the sea air together.
The waves can do their thing. For now, Grandma Odessa and Copper are happy to sit on the boardwalk and talk about nothing at all.
