Grandma Nell Drifted Off Mid-Show. Waffles Stayed on Guard.
The television is dark and the lamps are low, and Grandma Nell has fallen asleep in her beige recliner with her glasses still on. Her chin rests gently on her chest, a gray cardigan around her shoulders and a blue top beneath. Waffles lies next to her across the armrest and her lap, his red and white body stretched out and his chin resting on the chair, long white paws dangling over the edge. His eyes are open just enough to keep watch. Behind them a yellow knitted throw, a tissue box, a remote and framed pictures fill the warm living room.
Beagles are social, pack-oriented dogs that like being close to their people, and a nap together is a favorite way to spend an evening. If your dog likes to share your chair, keep an eye on weight and comfort, since a heavy dog on the armrest can be awkward for both of you. Beagles also love to eat, so keep snacks off the side table and out of reach. A regular bedtime routine helps dogs settle, and a soft bed in the same room is an easy compromise if the recliner is too crowded. If you notice your dog is sleeping much more than usual, or has trouble getting comfortable, mention it to your vet.
The show can run itself tonight. The recliner has two sleepers now, and the lamp stays on for the one who is still half awake.
