Grandma Ruth Sat Down to Breakfast. Cocoa Stood Up to Ask for His.
The sun is out, the patio is quiet and breakfast is on the table. Grandma Ruth sits in her sage-green quilted vest, smiling softly as she looks across at Cocoa. The little Dachshund has risen up on his hind legs, front paws planted on the table edge and his ears hanging down on either side of his face. A pastry, a bowl of berries and a coffee mug are within his sight. Potted plants and a cottage wall fill the bright patio behind them. A bowl of fruit and a napkin sit just beyond his reach. The morning feels unhurried and sweet.
Dachshunds can be champions at begging, and breakfast is a favorite time. Some people foods are dangerous for dogs, including chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions and anything sweetened with xylitol, so keep them out of reach. A dog who rests his paws on the table may be asking politely, but teaching him to wait on the floor builds better habits. Because of the breed's long back, standing on hind legs for a long time is not ideal, so lift him down or give him a place to sit. Give him his own small treat at mealtime, and ask your vet what is healthy for him.
Ruth is probably going to say no, but she is smiling about it. He is hard to resist. Cocoa is making his case as best he can, ears and all.
