Grandma Ruth Rocked Gently in Her Chair. Cocoa Slept Right Below.
The old rocker creaks softly, and Grandma Ruth sits back in it with her hands resting in her lap. She wears a quilted olive vest over a cream sweater, and her gaze drifts off to the side. At her feet, Cocoa lies curled on a woven rug with his nose tucked toward his tail and his eyes closed. Behind them, a laundry basket, a stack of blankets and a window with soft light fill the cozy room. The house has the hush of a lazy afternoon. A sweater hangs over the arm of the chair, and the whole room feels settled.
Dogs sleep a lot, and a Dachshund in particular can nap for much of the day. A rug or bed near his favorite person helps him feel secure. Rocking chairs, though, deserve some caution. A dog sleeping near the runners can get a tail or paw caught, so look before you rock and give him a bed a little farther away. Dachshunds like to burrow, so a soft blanket in his bed is a good idea. Keep his sleeping space draft-free, and support his long back when you lift him. Talk to your vet if your dog seems stiff after rest or reluctant to move.
Ruth rocks and Cocoa snoozes. There is nothing that needs doing, and both of them know it. Every house needs a spot like this.
