Laundry Day Got Interrupted by a Maine Coon Hanging From a Sheet
Somehow a full-grown Maine Coon is hanging from a bedsheet, and Nora is laughing about it. Maple has leapt onto the clothesline fabric, her front paws gripping the white cloth, her hind legs stretched out and her fluffy striped tail high in the air. Grandma Nora, in a knitted cardigan with a pair of earrings gleaming, reaches up with one hand and grins at the commotion. Wooden clothespins dot the line, and a laundry basket, a houseplant, a bottle of detergent and a pair of blue slippers wait on the floor.
Large cats can be surprisingly athletic. A Maine Coon can weigh well over ten pounds, and she is still strong, agile and ready to pounce on anything that moves. Hanging laundry offers fabric that flaps, sways and conceals, which is as good as a toy. To keep her safe, hang clothes where a falling cat can't land on something sharp or hard, and make sure the line and poles are secure. Keep clothespins and small items away from her, since they can be swallowed. A scratching post and a wand toy give an active cat a better outlet for climbing. If a cat leaps a lot, regular play and vet checkups keep her joints healthy.
Nora steadies the sheet with a quick hand and shakes her head. The line sags and the sheet will need washing again, but she doesn't seem to mind. A laundry day with a Maine Coon will never be quite as quick as one without. It will certainly be funnier.
