Nora and Maple Spent a Misty Morning at the Pond Before the Fish Woke
The pond is mirror-still in the early light, and the dock is already set for a quiet morning. Nora sits on the weathered boards with a soft smile, looking down at Maple, who gazes up at her with her chest out and her paws neatly together. A fishing rod lies across the planks with its reel catching the light, and a tackle box, a bucket and a canvas bag sit tucked nearby. Reeds, bare trees and a far shoreline fade into pale mist.
A morning on the water suits many cats if they are comfortable outdoors, but a dock needs extra care. Use a harness and leash so she cannot slip into the water, and never leave a cat unattended on a dock. Fishing gear is another hazard. Hooks, line and lures can injure a curious cat, and a swallowed hook or line is an emergency, so keep tackle in a closed box and call your vet right away if there is an accident. Watch for splinters, loose nails and cold, slippery wood. Maine Coons are sociable and often happy to go along on calm outings, especially when someone they love is there.
Nora hasn't checked her line yet, and it doesn't seem to matter. She is looking at her friend, and her friend is looking at her. The mist lifts slowly over the water, the quiet settles and the day begins. If a fish never bites, it will still have been a very good morning.
