Grandpa Gus Used Domino as a Pillow and Both Fell Fast Asleep
Sunshine, soft grass and not one thing left to do. Grandpa Gus lies on the lawn with his head resting on Domino's side, his eyes closed and his white mustache lifted by a slow breath. The black and white pied French Bulldog sleeps right back, jaw relaxed, bat ears drooping and one front paw stretched out on the grass. Gus wears his olive fishing vest, pockets full of tools, and behind the two sleepers a flower pot and a few garden tools stand along the fence.
French Bulldogs are a flat-faced, or brachycephalic, breed, which means they can have trouble breathing and cooling down. On warm days, they overheat much more easily than most dogs, so a nap in the sun should be short and always with shade and fresh water close by. Signs of heat trouble include heavy panting, loud breathing, drooling or weakness, and they call for moving the dog somewhere cool and contacting your vet. Frenchies are known for being affectionate, clownish and devoted to their people, and many love nothing more than lying right against a favorite human. A shaded spot under a tree or a cool patch of the porch is a safer choice for long naps.
Gus snores softly and Domino answers with a snuffle. A bee drifts through the flowers and neither stirs. It is the kind of afternoon that doesn't need to be remembered in detail, only felt. Two good friends, a patch of lawn and a lazy sunbeam are enough to fill the hours.
