Gus Watched the Line and Domino Watched Gus With Big Dark Eyes
Gus has a line in the water, but his fishing buddy has lost interest in fish. Domino sits on the mossy planks of the dock, his big dark eyes turned up, wrinkled forehead and bat ears tilted, and a thin leather collar around his neck. Grandpa Gus smiles beside him in his tan cap and green fishing vest, the rod in his hand pointing out over the dark water. A wooden pier stretches behind them, with a watering can and garden plants along the shore and a quiet gray sky above.
French Bulldogs are not natural swimmers. Their heavy, wide chests, short legs and flat faces make it hard to stay afloat, so a dock is a place for caution. Keep him on a leash, avoid the edge, and use a canine life jacket if he will be near water. Fishing gear is another concern. Hooks, lures and line can injure a dog, and swallowed line is an emergency, so keep tackle closed. Dogs should also stay out of water that has algae or mud and drink fresh water from a bowl rather than the pond. Moss on boards can be slippery, so watch his footing. Talk to your vet about safe outdoor activities for your dog.
Domino isn't worried about fish. He is looking at Gus, waiting for something, perhaps a snack, perhaps a story. Gus keeps his rod steady and lets the quiet stretch. Whether the fish bite hardly matters. It's the sort of day that is made by simply being there, in good company, with water, wood and a patient friend.
