Grandpa Gus and Domino Sat Out the Rain Under the Porch Roof

Rain falls in soft gray lines past the porch roof, and the whole yard has gone quiet. Grandpa Gus sits with his gaze turned out to the mist, glasses low, his gray hair slightly tousled and his white mustache lifted in a thoughtful expression. Domino, the pied French Bulldog, rests close against his side with his bat ears pricked and his black-and-white face turned the same way. A checkered flannel shirt hangs from the railing, a thermos stands on the rail and potted plants drip in the damp air. Misty trees fade into the distance.

Many dogs find the sound and smell of rain interesting, and a porch is a good place to enjoy it from. Some dogs, however, are nervous about thunder, so watch for signs such as panting, trembling or hiding, and offer a quiet, cozy space if he seems upset. Rainy days can also mean less exercise, so indoor games such as hide-and-seek with treats or a gentle tug toy help burn energy. Frenchies are sensitive to cold and damp because of their short coats, so dry him off after any time outside. If thunder or fireworks cause serious stress for your dog, talk to your vet about ways to help.

Neither of them says anything. The rain taps the roof, a gutter gurgles and the air smells of wet earth. It is the sort of weather that makes a porch feel like a small ship, safe in a gray sea. Gus rests a hand on his friend's back, and Domino sighs, perfectly content to wait it out.
