Gus Hummed an Old Tune and Domino Wagged Along in the Kitchen
There's a tune in Gus's head, and Domino seems to know it. The pied French Bulldog stands tall on the kitchen floor with his mouth open in a happy pant, tail curved up and wagging hard behind him. Grandpa Gus bends toward him, a white-mustached smile on his face, gently scratching his chin with one hand. A worn plaid shirt and a green vest hang loose on him. Behind them, a warm kitchen with a dish rack, a wooden spoon, a basket of onions and garlic and a bright yellow towel on the counter.
A wagging tail often means a dog is excited, but it is not always a sign of calm. Watch the full body. A loose, wiggly body and soft eyes usually mean he is relaxed and happy, while a stiff body or a high, fast tail may signal arousal or tension. Frenchies are known for their joyful wiggles, and many have little tails that make their whole back end shake. Kitchens can be hazardous for dogs, so keep him away from dropped food and hot surfaces. Garlic and onions, shown on the counter, are harmful to dogs, so keep them well out of reach. A gentle chin scratch is a lovely way to bond.
Gus sways a little, keeping time with something only he can hear. Domino wiggles along, not bothered by the lack of music. In a kitchen full of warm light and good smells, two old friends invent a dance with no steps. It's a simple pleasure, and nobody is watching.
