Gus and Domino Dozed on the Porch Swing Without a Care in the World

Gus's head has tipped back, his mouth is relaxed and he is fast asleep. The porch swing hangs from its chains, barely moving. Curled across his middle is Domino, the pied French Bulldog, who has also fallen into a deep sleep, ears folded back and chin resting on Gus's arm. Gus is wearing his green fishing vest, and the porch behind them is full of flowerpots, a hanging jacket and a few well-used boots by the rail.

Frenchies are great nappers, and many love sleeping right against their people. Because they are flat-faced, they sometimes snore, snort or breathe noisily, which is common for the breed. Pay attention to the temperature, though, as a porch can get warm in the afternoon. Make sure he has shade, fresh water and a way to get down, and check the swing's chains and seat to be sure they are secure. A sleeping dog on an elevated swing can fall if he startles, so a nearby cushion on the floor is a good idea. If your dog seems to gasp or struggle while sleeping, talk to your vet.

Neither one moves. A light breeze lifts the leaves on the porch plants, and the swing keeps up its lazy sway. It's an easy kind of friendship, the kind that doesn't need words or plans. When they wake, the afternoon will be a little further along, and the world will feel exactly as it should.
