Grandpa Told the Golden Retriever Something on the Tailgate
Gus has settled onto the dented tailgate with his hands resting on his knees, and Biscuit has parked herself right next to him, nose tilted up toward his face. He is smiling down and seems to be saying something only she needs to hear. Past the backyard fence a wide field of ripe gold stretches out under an overcast sky, and a lit window glows in the house behind them.
Dogs are remarkably good at reading human faces and voices, and many seem to enjoy being talked to in a calm, warm tone. Golden Retrievers in particular tend to hold eye contact and lean in when someone speaks to them, which is part of why they are so often chosen as family companions and helpers. For older adults, a regular routine with a pet, like a daily sit outside, can add structure and a feeling of company to the day. If you let your dog ride in a truck bed or sit on a tailgate, though, keep it supervised and never leave it on a moving vehicle, since a loose dog can easily be hurt. A harness and a seat belt clip inside the cab is a safer way to travel.
The evening air looks cool and the field looks still. Nothing is happening here except a man and his dog enjoying the end of a day, and that seems to be exactly enough.
