Grandpa Raked a Perfect Leaf Pile. Biscuit Saw an Opportunity

AI imagegolden retrieverautumn leavesbackyard

Gus had just finished gathering a tidy mound of red and gold leaves when Biscuit took off from the walkway and launched herself straight at it. Her front paws are mid-air, her ears are flying, and her mouth is wide open in sheer delight. Gus leans on his rake with a plaid shirt under his overalls and a crooked grin, watching all that careful work scatter. Behind them the porch is crowded with a basket, work boots, a watering can, and a few small pumpkins.

Leaf piles are a classic dog pleasure, and they are mostly safe fun with a little attention. Check the pile for hidden sticks, sharp objects, or damp, moldy leaves, since mold can bother a dog that eats it. Some dogs also like to gulp mouthfuls of leaves, which can upset the stomach, so it helps to redirect them with a ball or toy. After play, a quick brushing gets burrs and twigs out of a golden Retriever's feathery coat before they turn into tangles. Raking is also decent gentle exercise for seniors, as long as they take breaks and use a comfortable grip. If your dog has any trouble breathing in dusty air, talk to your vet.

By the time the last leaf settles, the raking will probably have to start over. Gus does not look upset about that. Some chores are really just an excuse for a dog to have her big autumn moment.
