Grandpa Lifted the Golden Retriever for a Better Look at the Snow

Biscuit is up on her hind legs, front paws resting on the windowsill, and she is looking out at the snowy yard with her head high. Gus stands behind her with his arms wrapped around her chest, his face turned toward her with a gentle smile. Outside the glass, bare branches and evergreens are dusted white, and the sky is soft and gray. A laundry basket, boots, and knit hats are tucked into the back-porch corner behind them.

Dogs are curious about weather, and many love watching it from a window. Falling snow carries new smells and movement, and a golden Retriever's thick coat makes it a breed that usually enjoys the cold. Before heading out to play, though, a few simple steps help: wipe paws afterward to remove ice and salt, keep outings short when temperatures drop, and watch older dogs for stiffness or shivering. Lifting a big dog is also a lot for human backs and for dog joints, so when a dog this size wants a better view, a sturdy stool or a low windowsill is often easier for both of you. Ask your vet if you are unsure about carrying or lifting a larger dog.

For now the two of them just watch the flakes drift down. It is hard to say who is more delighted, but from the look on Gus's face, it might be a tie.
