The TV Was On, Grandpa Was Resting, and the Dog Found a Perch

The television is dark, the slippers are kicked off on the floor, and the whole living room has settled into a lazy lull. Gus sits back in a big tan recliner with his mouth slightly open and his hands loose, fast asleep. Biscuit has climbed onto the armrest beside him, her chin resting on the soft cushion and her eyes shut tight. A basket of blankets and a plant by the window finish the picture of a perfectly ordinary, perfectly peaceful afternoon.

Dogs that sleep close to their people are usually showing trust and comfort. Many dogs love a raised spot where they can feel near a family member, and a recliner arm offers a perfect pillow. A large breed like a golden Retriever may be tempted to climb up, though, and jumping on and off furniture can be hard on older joints, so a small ramp or step can help. Make sure the chair is stable and that your dog cannot get caught in the moving parts of a recliner, since those mechanisms can pinch a tail or paw. If your dog seems unsteady or sore after napping, check with your vet.

Neither of them has a thing on the to-do list right now. The show can run without anyone watching, and the best seats in the house are, in fact, the ones with someone to sleep beside.
