Grandpa Pulled Up Two Lawn Chairs to Watch the Sunset
The sky behind the wooden fence is turning pink and orange, and Walt sits back in a folding lawn chair with his hands folded in his lap. A second green chair sits empty beside him, and Pepper sits on the grass at his feet, tilting his head as if listening. The yard around them is plain and homey: a rake against the fence, a hose reel, a clay pot, and a few patches of leaves. Neither of them seems to have anything to do but watch the light change.
Evenings are a lovely time for a dog to wind down. Many dogs enjoy a regular end-of-day routine, such as a short stroll followed by a quiet sit outside with their person. A Miniature Schnauzer is an alert little watchdog, so he might bark at passersby, and teaching a calm quiet cue helps keep sunsets peaceful. If you sit outside as the day cools, make sure your dog has water and that the yard is secure, because schnauzers can be quick to chase a squirrel. Light reflective gear or a collar light helps in low light. Spending time outdoors can be a relaxing way for older adults and their pets to unwind together.
The empty chair may be waiting for a visitor, or for Pepper to decide he wants it. For now, two friends and a sunset are enough company.
