Grandpa Stood on the Porch and Watched the Storm With His Cat
Rain pours steadily over the yard and the porch roof is a dry island above it all. Harold stands at the edge in his dark red plaid shirt, his silver hair damp at the temples, holding Smoky against his chest. She looks out at the rain with big golden eyes, her ears forward and her ruff thick and fluffy. Plants stand in pots along the rail and the lawn beyond is a blur of green and gray. The air looks cool and everything smells like wet earth.
Many cats are fascinated by rain, and they may watch it from a window or doorway for a long while. Maine Coons are known for being curious and calm, and their thick, water-shedding coats make them a bit more comfortable around damp weather than some breeds. Still, a wet cat can get chilled, so keep her dry and warm and towel her off if she has been in the rain. Storms can also frighten cats, so a quiet room with a hiding spot and a soft blanket can help. Make sure your cat has a collar or microchip in case she bolts at a loud noise, and talk to your vet if thunderstorms make her very anxious.
For now the two of them are comfortable and dry. The rain can fall as long as it likes, and the porch will keep them both cozy.
