Grandma Watered the Petunias and Penny Inspected Every Drop
Grandma leans over a flower bed in a green cardigan and a floral blouse, tipping a galvanized watering can so that a gentle spray falls over bright pink and purple petunias. Her glasses and gold earring catch the light, and she smiles down at the blooms. Penny the Yorkshire Terrier sits close, ears perked and nose lifted toward the sprinkle. A wicker basket of gardening tools, a canvas bag, a pair of sandals, and a stack of newspapers sit around the yard. The air is cool and the soil looks freshly turned.
Gardens and dogs can mix well with some care. Many fertilizers, pesticides, and slug baits are dangerous to dogs, so keep them stored away and check labels for pet safety. Some garden plants can also be harmful if chewed, so look up the plants in your yard. Petunias are generally considered safe for dogs, but if your dog eats something unusual, call your vet. Small dogs like Yorkies love to sniff, so supervise her near plants and soil. Wash her paws after garden outings.
Penny is inspecting the process closely. Grandma works patiently, giving each flower a drink. The garden smells fresh and damp. Penny gives the watering can a final, suspicious sniff before settling down for good, I suppose.
A watered garden and a curious dog make a pleasant afternoon.
