Grandma Dipped Her Toes in the Lake While Penny Stayed Close
Grandma sits at the edge of an old wooden dock in a sage-green shirt, her bare feet dipping into the cool lake and ripples spreading around her ankles. Her glasses sit on her nose, her short gray curls are neat, and she looks down at Penny the Yorkshire Terrier with a gentle, loving smile. Penny sits snugly against her side, her ears perked and her eyes bright. Behind them, a grassy lawn with lawn chairs and a calm lake with trees on the far shore glow in the soft evening light. Dragonflies skim the surface and the boards are still warm.
Docks and small dogs call for care. Even a good swimmer can tire quickly in open water, so keep her on a leash and consider a doggy life vest. Watch for splinters and gaps in the boards, which can hurt small paws. Offer clean drinking water so she does not drink from the lake, and rinse her coat afterward to keep it from tangling. Yorkies are curious and brave, so supervise them near water.
Penny stays on the boards, with no wish to follow Grandma's toes into the water. She sits close, as always. The lake is calm and the light is gentle. The evening has no schedule, and nothing needs to be rushed.
