Penny Ran Out of Energy, So Grandma Carried Her the Rest of the Way

Grandma smiles down at the little dog in her arms as she reaches the porch steps. Her glasses rest on top of her short silver hair, and her soft gray cardigan looks warm against the autumn air. Penny the Yorkshire Terrier sits snugly in the crook of her arm, her ears perked and her dark eyes looking calmly into the distance. Behind them, a wooden door, a potted fern, and a bottle of water sit on the porch, and a black iron railing runs along the steps. Fallen leaves are scattered over the bricks and steps.

Yorkies are small, but many of them are surprisingly energetic, and a long walk can tire them out. Watch for signs of fatigue, like slowing down or sitting down, and offer a rest and some water. Carrying a small dog is fine if you support her chest and hind legs, but be careful on steps. A harness can be gentler on a small dog's neck than a collar, and your vet can advise on the right amount of exercise.

Penny does not mind the lift at all. She looks as though she has earned the ride. Grandma, smiling, takes the last steps slowly. Soon there will be a bowl of fresh water, a warm bed, and a long sleep.

Home is just a few steps away.
