Grandpa and Pebble Napped Cheek to Cheek on the Sunny Lawn
Grandpa lies on the warm lawn in a chunky cream cardigan, his cheek pressed against Pebble's soft gray fur and his eyes shut. Pebble is tucked right up under his chin, round face squished and eyes closed in perfect contentment. A wooden fence, a flowerpot, and a scattering of garden bits are blurred in the background.
The light is golden and the grass is warm, and neither of them stirs. The two look like old companions who have shared countless afternoons exactly like this one.
Cats love to nap in the sun, and a warm lawn is a favorite spot. Sunbathing is generally fine, but light-colored or thin-furred cats can get sunburned on their ears and noses, so ask your vet about protection. Make sure the lawn is free of fertilizers, weed killers, and pests like ticks and fleas, and keep her inside a fenced yard or on a harness. A fresh bowl of water and a shady spot nearby help her stay comfortable. The Exotic Shorthair's thick coat holds heat, so watch for panting or restlessness.
Wherever the afternoon goes, they will drift along together. It may be a short nap or a long one, and neither of them is counting. When they finally wake, there will be a stretch, a yawn, and a long look at the sky, and then supper will be the only thing on the agenda.
