A Little Wooden Wagon in the Backyard Was Carrying Very Precious Cargo
A little wooden wagon with a rope handle sits in the backyard grass, filled with straw and carrying very precious cargo. A big silver Norwegian Forest Cat sits upright in the middle of it, his magnificent ruff and tufted ears making him look like a lion in miniature. His long, bushy tail drapes over the side, and his golden eyes gaze calmly out across the yard. Five chicks share the ride, perched in the straw around him like passengers waiting for the trip to begin. Gardening gloves, a blue watering can, and a pair of boots sit by the house nearby.
Many cat owners want to give indoor cats a taste of fresh air, and there are safe ways to do it. Some cats can learn to wear a well-fitted harness and walk on a leash, especially if training starts slowly indoors with treats and short sessions. Enclosed outdoor spaces, often called catios, let cats enjoy sunshine, birdsong, and breezes without the risks of traffic, predators, or getting lost. Even a secure window box can help. Whatever the setup, cats that spend time outside should be up to date on vaccines and parasite prevention, and wearing an ID tag or being microchipped is a smart extra layer of protection.
This silver gentleman seems perfectly happy to be chauffeured around the yard instead of walking. With five tiny companions and a soft bed of straw, it looks like a very fine way to travel.
