The Wheelbarrow Was Supposed to Carry Soil. A Grey Persian Repurposed It.
The old metal wheelbarrow was supposed to carry soil to the flower beds, but it has been repurposed as a lounge. A thick-coated grey Persian sprawls across a layer of straw inside, his round copper eyes giving the camera a look of mild disapproval, as if gardeners should know better than to interrupt. Three chicks share the space. One stands near his shoulder, and two sit close to his chest, comfortably nestled in the straw and soil. A blue watering can, garden gloves, clay pots with dry stems, and a coil of hose fill the corners of this busy potting area.
Longhaired cats who spend time around straw, soil, and garden debris pick up all kinds of hitchhikers in their coats. Daily combing with a wide-toothed metal comb, followed by a softer brush, helps remove bits of plant material before they tangle into mats. Mats can pull painfully on the skin and are easiest to prevent rather than fix. Pay extra attention to the armpits, belly, behind the ears, and the back of the legs, where fur rubs and knots quickly. Never cut a mat out with scissors close to the skin, since cat skin is thin and easy to nick. A professional groomer or your vet can safely remove stubborn mats.
Despite the grumpy face, this Persian seems perfectly at home in his makeshift bed. The garden work can surely wait until he and his little friends are finished resting.
