Down Among the Sunflowers, a Tuxedo Cat Had Some Bright Little Company
Golden sunflowers nod on tall stems all around, their bright petals glowing against a weathered wooden fence. Down among the leaves and dry soil, a black and white tuxedo cat lies with his white paws stretched forward, green eyes calm and whiskers fanned wide. Four yellow chicks crowd against his side, so close in color to the flowers that they almost look like blossoms that hopped off their stems. One perches on top of the group, peering upward, while the others snuggle into his white chest. Warm late-summer light makes the whole garden feel soft and slow.
Sunflowers are a cheerful choice for gardens shared with pets, since they are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though eating lots of any plant can still upset a stomach. Backyard chicken keepers often love sunflowers too. Once the heads dry, the seeds make a popular treat for grown chickens, and many people simply hang a dried head in the run for the birds to pick at. Treats should stay a small part of the diet, though, since a balanced feed made for their age provides the nutrition chickens need. Baby chicks should stick to chick starter until they are older.
For now, nobody here is thinking about seeds or feed. A warm patch of garden, tall flowers overhead, and good company seem like more than enough for one golden afternoon.
