A Brown Tabby Claimed the Old Tractor Seat. Then the Ducklings Piled On.
Somewhere in this dusty workshop, a tractor seat has been put to an entirely new use. A brown tabby cat with bold stripes and alert green eyes sits on the worn, cracked vinyl cushion, front paws tucked in neatly, while six yellow ducklings have piled onto the seat right next to him. A couple of them have climbed up against his side, and the rest are huddled together in a fluffy cluster. Around them, a window with a gauzy curtain lets in pale light, and the floor is scattered with muddy boots, a basket, and a denim jacket hanging on the wall.
The American Shorthair has deep roots in working life. Its ancestors are believed to have traveled with early settlers and earned their keep as mousers on ships, farms, and in barns. Today the breed is known for being sturdy, healthy, adaptable, and easygoing, with a calm, friendly personality that suits family life. The classic brown tabby pattern, with its swirls and stripes, is one of the most recognizable looks. American Shorthairs enjoy food quite a bit, so measured meals and regular play help them stay at a healthy weight. Your vet can help you figure out the right portion size.
Of course, this tabby is not mousing today. He is apparently running a very small daycare, and the ducklings could not be happier with the arrangement. The engine may be long gone, but this old seat still has plenty of life in it.
