A Saint Bernard Became a Warm Nest for a Whole Litter of Kittens

A large red-and-white Saint Bernard rests on a couch with his chin lifted and his gentle, sleepy eyes looking toward us. Curled into the crook of his front legs is a heap of tiny kittens in ginger, black and white, and gray, all asleep in one fluffy ball. A table with mugs and a window with sheer curtains give the room a calm, sunny feel. The cushions are rumpled and a pillow is pushed aside to make room, as though the whole couch had been rearranged for the kittens.

We might call the Saint Bernard Bernard, which is surely a family name. His white paw rests along the kittens like a fence, and his patient expression suggests that he has been holding this position for a long time. It is a picture of enormous patience.

Saint Bernards were bred in the Swiss Alps and are known for being gentle, patient giants. They are very large, so they need plenty of room, regular grooming and cool places to rest, since their thick coats can make them overheat. Because of their size, adults should always be watched around small animals, and kittens must never be left alone with a dog that is too excited. Kittens sleep a great deal, and cuddling together helps them stay warm. A quiet spot away from drafts and noise helps them rest.

Bernard doesn't plan to move, and the kittens aren't going anywhere either.
