A Black Lab Snoozed by the Fire While Kittens Curled Up Beside Him

AI imagelabrador retrieverkittenswood stove

Firelight glows through the glass door of a wood stove while a black Labrador Retriever lies on a thick knitted blanket with his head down and his eyes closed. At his chin a litter of kittens, ginger, gray tabby and cream, have curled into one soft heap. Two lamps shine in the corner and a wood-paneled wall adds to the cozy feel of the cabin-like room. The warm glow flickers over the blanket and makes every whisker shine.

We could call the Labrador Jet. His glossy black coat almost blends into the shadows, and the kittens look like small lanterns beside him. Everything is warm, quiet and a little bit sleepy.

Labrador Retrievers are friendly, patient and affectionate dogs, and they often do well with young animals when they are properly trained. If you have a wood stove, use a secure screen to keep pets from touching the hot surface, and keep kittens away from the stove door. Kittens cannot control their body temperature well, so warmth is important, but a safe heating pad or a warm blanket is better than getting too close to fire. Always supervise, keep cords and ashes out of reach, and ask your vet if you are unsure how to care for young kittens.

Jet and the kittens seem to have found a very good place to spend the winter. It is a cabin evening in its purest form.
