The Maltese Found a Line of Ducklings Walking the Garden Bed Edge
The white Maltese stands with her head tilted and her dark eyes round, staring at a line of ducklings that has just appeared in the garden bed. The yellow ducklings walk single file along the wooden edge, with their orange bills pointed out and their feet gripping the boards. Dirt, clover leaves and a few dry petals fill the bed behind them. The Maltese seems to be trying to work out where they came from.
Maltese dogs are small, gentle companions with long white coats that need daily brushing. They are often friendly and alert, and they tend to bark at anything new, which could explain this careful, wide-eyed inspection. Gardens can hide hazards for pets, including fertilizers, slug bait and certain mulches, such as cocoa mulch, which is harmful to dogs. Ducklings can be hurt by pesticides too. Before letting any animals roam, check what has been used. If you plan to raise ducklings, they need warmth, water and a safe, protected place. Your vet can give you advice on the best setup.
The Maltese looks rather like a polite neighbor who has found a delivery she did not order. She sniffs the air, takes a small step, and stops. The ducklings continue their march, completely unbothered. Everything in the garden seems to be in order, except that nobody has quite figured out who is following whom. It is a charming little moment of curiosity on both sides.
