A Cocker Spaniel and Six Ducklings Soaked Up the Sun on the Deck
A parti-color Cocker Spaniel lies on a sun-warmed wooden deck, his long, curly ears draped across his front paws and his soft brown eyes cast downward. Right beside him, in a tidy line that stretches into the left side of the picture, six yellow ducklings are sitting on the boards, each one tucked in a ball with its bill pointed outward. Beyond the deck, a green yard and a chain-link fence glow in the late light.
Cocker Spaniels were bred as bird-flushing gundogs, which makes this scene particularly polite. They are known as gentle, cheerful dogs with a sweet nature, though a spaniel's hunting instinct can show up around birds, so careful supervision is a must. Their long ears and coat need regular grooming, and ears should be dried and checked often to prevent infections. Ducklings need warm surfaces, but metal or sun-baked boards can get too hot, and slick floors can hurt their legs, so look for a safe surface. Your vet can tell you how to care for both dog and ducklings.
It is a lovely example of instinct being set aside for friendship. The spaniel looks calm and curious, with just a hint of tenderness in the way he lowers his head. The ducklings do not seem to question it at all. The sun on the deck keeps everyone cozy, and the afternoon passes slowly. A friendship like this does not need a lot of explaining, just a warm board and a good view.
