Seven Ducklings Lined Up Next to a Great Dane's Nose
A blue and white checkered blanket is spread across the living room floor, and a fawn Great Dane has stretched out at one end with his chin resting flat and his droopy eyes soft. Lined up beside his nose, shoulder to shoulder, is a perfectly straight row of fluffy yellow ducklings, seven in all, each facing the same direction. Behind them is a cozy clutter of toys, shoes and baskets, with a framed painting leaning on the wall. The tiny birds look comically small next to the giant dog.
Great Danes are among the tallest dog breeds, yet they are often called gentle giants. Many are calm, affectionate and patient, which can make them kind companions for smaller animals when properly introduced. Their size, though, means that even an accidental step can be dangerous for a duckling. Supervision matters at all times. Ducklings need a warm, dry brooder, clean water and appropriate feed, and they should not live on a slick floor, which can harm their legs. A vet can advise on raising ducklings safely, and it is wise to keep them separate from dogs when no one is watching.
The Dane has settled in with great patience, and the ducklings look unbothered. It is a picture of the biggest and smallest sharing a quiet afternoon, and each of them seems to know exactly where they belong.
